Kareeb Movie Review

Kareeb is a 1998 Indian Hindi-language romance film written, produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It stars Bobby Deol and Neha Bajpai as two young lovers who face many obstacles in their relationship due to their different social backgrounds and family pressures.

Plot Summary

Birju Kumar (Bobby Deol) is a carefree young man from an upper-middle-class family in Himachal Pradesh. His father (Saurabh Shukla) is a strict businessman who wants Birju to be responsible and join his business. Birju, however, is more interested in petty theft, lies, and romancing a beautiful young woman named Neha (Neha Bajpai). Neha is a simple, honest, and hardworking girl from a poor family. She works as a school teacher and supports her widowed mother (Moushmi Chatterji) and younger brother.

Birju falls in love with Neha at first sight and tries to woo her with his charm and lies. Neha initially resists his advances but gradually falls for him too. Birju's father does not approve of their relationship and wants Birju to marry a rich girl. Birju lies to his father that Neha's uncle is a wealthy businessman and arranges their wedding. He also steals money from his home and pretends that it is sent by Neha's uncle as dowry.

However, on the night of the wedding, Birju's father discovers the truth and calls off the wedding. He insults Neha and her family and accuses them of being gold diggers. Neha's mother suffers a heart attack due to the shock and humiliation. Neha blames Birju for lying to her and breaking her trust. She asks him to never show his face again.

Neha takes her mother to a hospital in Shimla in an ambulance. Birju follows them in his car, hoping to apologize and win her back. He reaches Shimla but loses track of Neha. He meets Bhigelal (Johnny Lever), a laundry shop owner who dreams of visiting England someday. Bhigelal hires Birju as his helper and gives him shelter.

Birju also meets Uncle (Vijay Kashyap) and Aunty (Sushma Seth), a kind-hearted couple who treat him like their son. They offer to help him whenever he needs it. Birju finds out that Neha's mother needs an urgent operation that costs a lot of money. He decides to earn the money by working hard and also by buying a lottery ticket that Uncle and Aunty promise to make him win by bribing some officials.

Meanwhile, Neha meets Dr. Abhay (Abhay Chopra), a young and handsome doctor who falls in love with her. He proposes to marry her and offers to treat her mother for free as his relative. Neha is confused about her feelings for Birju and Abhay.
